Rise and Shine- High Waist Denim

You’ve heard right ladies! High-waisted denim has returned and in a big way.  I can understand why a rise that comes to and sometimes past your belly button is a bit daunting. BUT high-waisted denim can create an elongated silhouette for your body, which basically means you look long, lean, and fabulous.

To be honest, the first thought that came to my mind about high-waisted denim that scene in the cult classic coming-of-age film Dazed and Confused where the girls are helping their friend zip her high-waisted jeans with a pair of pliers.  I had to giggle at that thought because I bet if any of you were to ask an older female relative, they would recall having to do that same thing once or twice when they owned their very own (now vintage) high-waisted flare jeans.

Now don’t bust out your toolboxes just yet– the introduction of spandex to our denim’s poly/cotton mix has officially put an end to the pliers’ part-time job. This means that not only can you successfully zip up your own high-waisted jeans, you can also tuck in your fashionable tops, add a skinny belt, AND munch out hard at your local chinese buffet (my biggest weakness) without worries. Oh the joys of stretch!

I am not telling you to bust out your “mom” jeans again. We, the fashionable, all know that when a trend returns there is always a new spin to a classic silhouette/fit. That’s how fashion works, and this is the reason why we (women) can NEVER clean out our wardrobes. What if a trend comes back in style? Well guess what… if it does then those high-waisted jeans that you snuck out of your mother’s closet from when she was your age might just be back in style… Like right now.

Feeling a little “high” from all of this fashionable rattling of tongue (in my case, typing of hand)? Why don’t you take a look at all of the high-waisted new arrivals from gliks.com?

Vegan Friendly Friday

Cooler weather means only one thing to me… layers. All of my summer inspired frocks are taken off their hangers and neatly packed away. In exchange my closet is now filled with heavier fall garments. Layering is a favorite pastime of mine; literally you can find me in at least 5 different layers of clothing at any given time.

If you see me on a regular basis like my lovely cohorts in the Marketing Department at Glik’s HQ, more often than not, you would find that my outermost layer is a chic autumn inspired jacket, which (to be honest) I’m shedding and re-layering on a regular basis.

Hey, using all of that fashionable brainpower tends to work up a sweat! Just kidding. No, actually I’m not.

This fall I am all about the vegan friendly persuasion. That’s right. Faux leather is a powerful member of my autumn jacket arsenal. Easy up-keep is key for me; it’s nice to know that I can wear my “worry-free” faux leather jacket out in a light rain and not worry about water damaging the material the same way it would real leather. I love the effortlessness of throwing on a vegan friendly leather jacket over a layered-up ensemble with a pair of dark skinnies tucked into a pair of rad boots.

Bottom Line: I don’t care how heated I get while wearing all of my fashionable layers behind my desk of awesomeness. I can get fan.

50 Shades of Flying Monkey for Fall

Denim is a timeless classic. Almost an everyday essential, nearly everyone’s wardrobe is occupied by at least a few pairs of denim jeans in various fits, cuts, and hues of indigo. But as much as we love our “true-blues,” keeping your stylish appetites sated means mixing up those indigos with more vibrant shades!

My point: add some color!

Whether it’s a statement red or an earthy, autumnal tone, colored jeggings from the hot brand Flying Monkey will prove to be a worthwhile investment for your fall wardrobe. But which colors should you look to invest into for the upcoming cooler seasons?

Earth tones: Be on the look-out for organic, earthy tones that take their hues from nature: moss greens, sandy neutrals, watery blues and rust tones.

Flying Monkey Rust Colored Jegging

Wine and Spirits: Looks like this red-purple part of the color spectrum will be the “must-have” shade of the season. Any wine-like color will work, whether it a deep merlot or a more purplish eggplant.

Bright & Bold: Burgundy might be at the top of the color trend at this moment, but if you’re looking to make a statement, then a bright hue that leans towards the red spectrum will stop any fashion critic in their tracks.

Flying Monkey Cherry Red Jegging

The colored denim movement has been brewing like a well-seasoned stew since it’s big breakout in Spring/Summer 2011, and there looks to be no end in sight as color continues to dominate the fashion-denim world with further laundered, destructed, faded, and print altered hues. Personally, I am very excited to see what becomes of this trend!

BB Dakota: Koa Coat

I’m excited to add the Koa Coat to our online arsenal of fabulous fall fashions online! This southwestern inspired coat from the always fashionable, BB Dakota brand is super cute.

I am really digging the color contrast, allover Santa Fe print, large front flap patch pockets and the fur-trimmed hood of the Koa coat.

Haha… I enjoy this BB Dakota coat so much so that I actually wore it while doing its write up to invoke the Koa spirit! Sorry, no pictures. I actually only lasted in it for about 5 minutes, it’s still 90+ degrees outside, but that was long enough.

My Point: The Koa coat is this season’s BB Dakota answer to last years VERY POPULAR Bostwick coat.

Note: Doesn’t Ashley Tisdale look adorable bundled up in her Bostwick coat from BB Dakota!? I can barely recognize her under all that warm fur! What sunglasses? Where did she go?

The stars have aligned and say that you need to add the Koa coat to your wardrobe ASAP! Your thermometers might still be reading in the 70’s but I PROMISE that cold weather is on its way and you will want to be fashionably ready!

A Colorful Collection of Jeggings {Flying Monkey}

Bold, Brilliant, and vividly Bright colors are definitely in this season, and leading this trend are denim skinny jeans and jeggings! I had (keyword being had) been debating a pair for some time. With so many colors, styles, and fits to choose from, I just didn’t know which was the right one for me. That was before I saw the skinny jeggings from Flying Monkey!

I personally love, love, love this brand! Not only are they a great fit BUT they’re also SUPER comfy! To be honest, I’ve actually fallen asleep in them (by accident) and not realized it until I woke up! Hence, the J-E-G-G-I-N-G part: jean + legging  = jegging!

Now, back to the colors! So how do you know which color is right for you? My first pair was the red Flying Monkey jeggings. The color red was an easy choice because it was still winter, and even though it was the first color that actually hit the stores, I knew they would be very versatile. Plus, I’m planning on wearing them for the 4th of July!

Flying Monkey Tomato Red Jegging

My next pair came this spring, and I went for the canary yellow Flying Monkey jeggings. I was feeling spicy that day and it turned out to be a great color choice! I have gotten so many compliments when I wear them out for a night on the town with my girlfriends or as part of a casual outfit for everyday errands.

Even though I love my Flying Monkey color jeggings, you may still be debating a pair of your own. I want to give you a few styling tips that helped me.

Bright Idea: Color Blocking!

Have fun with another fun trend: color blocking! It’s all about the bright ideas this summer, so give yourself the excuse to snag a boldly colored blazer or other lively pieces to rock with your color jeggings.

Pair ‘em with neutrals:

Let your colored denim steal the show by opting for neutral color pieces like white, cream, beige, brown, and black. Pastels are trending as well and are a gentle contrast of color to pair with your neutral tops.

Make your Prints Charming:

Add an extra “umph” to your color jeggings in the form of a pattern. Tops with polka dots, animal prints, tribal prints, horizontal stripes, tropical prints, or floral prints would be a fresh dash of spice to your outfit!

When it comes to colored denim, don’t fret too much about what to wear. Fashion is a fun form of personal expression, and there is nothing comfortable about forced style. The best style is your own style!

Season of the Headband

It was Blair from Gossip Girl who brought the headband back into the spotlight and now we are seeing everyone from celebs to teenage girls wearing them in new, innovative and enticing ways!

VIA

I have hunted down some of the most stylish and unique ways for wearing headbands this summer season!

Dress up a Pixie cut!

If you have short hair then a perfect way to give it an instant glam look is to add a headband. Be sure to choose one that is relatively skinny and lays flat to your head so as to not overwhelm or distract from your cute short cut. Not many girls can rock a pixie cut, but for those who can, I’m jealous. The right Pixie cut can look so darn chic!

Do It Yourself!

I am a HUGE fan of DIY crafts, and I have tons of ribbons and scraps of fabric hanging around my house. If you do too, put them to good use and create your very own simple DIY headband. Floppy bow headbands are easy to create. Here is what you can do: find any ribbon or thin strip of fabric that is lying around your house that’s long enough to wrap around your head twice. Begin by positioning the material at the base of your head, pull the sides of the material up behind your ears and tie it into a cute floppy bow. Be sure to twist it to your desired angle and adjust to any position that you desire.

Dress up and updo!

Low  chignons and  French twists can get boring—adding a headband is a simple way to spice up an updo by adding a bit of fun to a style that is classic, yet can sometimes be overdone. I would choose an embellished headband that will glam up whatever outfit you are wearing.

Make a Statement!

I feel that the same rule that goes with statement jewelry should be applied to wearing a statement headband. Keep it simple! If you’re wearing a statement headband then opt for a cleaner look. Take a minimalist’s approach to your jewelry, if you even need to wear jewelry at all. I normally don’t, but on occasion I will add simple stud earrings, and that’s all.

Adventures in Fashion!

If you’re the type of fashionista who likes to color-coordinate your legwear, outfit and accessories, please be sure to take a risk and add a little twist by mixing it up with different patterns and textures. Matchy-Matchy outfits can be bah-oring, so spice it up with a unique headband!

Use a Scarf!

We all have them floating around our rooms, closets and cars. Scarves are easy add-on accessories; they can dress up a plain tee and act as a mock necklace. Summer scarves are usually made of chiffon, so they’re light and breezy. If it is too hot to wear a fashion scarf around your neck, then tie it into your hair as a turban or knotted head wrap.

Headbands are all the rage this season! They make great statement pieces, add-ons and there are so many ways you can style them! I personally love headbands and am excited to see this trend carry through this spring/summer season. If you’re looking for the right headband, then head to gliks.com or visit a Glik’s store location nearest to you!

Warning: This headband trend is intended for female fashionistas ONLY.

Fedoras

Summer is here, and the ultra chic pair of sunglasses that you’re donning isn’t the only thing shielding you from the sun’s rays.  The “It” accessory of this summer season is a chic fedora!

It doesn’t surprise me that fedoras are trending right now. Hats in every shape, style and size are the ultimate add-on to any outfit this summer. You can turn the simplest outfit from boringly bland to oh-so-chic by simply donning a fedora. It’s really ingenuous actually.  A well-chosen hat can make a 180-degree difference on your outfit by adding a bit of drama to your look.

Katie Holmes is proof that sporting a casual outfit does not have to be boring. InStyle caught her on the beach in this blazer, tank and cut-off ensemble that she added some spice to by wearing a simple straw hat.

It’s called a bad hair day and every girl has them, unfortunately whether you’ve woken up with hair so alive even the greatest of lion tamers couldn’t handle it, gotten caught in the rain or lost a fight with the wind. Not only are fedoras super cute and chic, they’re also perfect for hiding unruly manes. StyleBistro caught Katie coming off a windy boat ride wearing a trendy open-knit sweater with wedges and a fedora.

Fedoras are not solely reserved for women this summer. Men are taking part in this trend as well. And if I might add, a man wearing a properly placed fedora looks very dapper.

StyleBistro also caught Tom Cruise wearing a matching fedora during his boat outing with Katie Holmes. I’d add that the hat heightens his woven/short outfit combo.

JustJared caught the Vampire Diaries star, Ian Somerhalder, at Coachella this April looking casually cool in the desert heat. His fedora adds extra style to his no-fuss tank and jeans outfit.

What do you think of fedoras? We want to know.  Don’t forget that you can stop by any of your local Glik’s store locations or check us out online at gliks.com for all your summer fashion needs.

Festival Fashion {Trends}

One of fashions favorite festivals, Coachella, kicks-off the second installment of its two-weekend stint today in Indio, California. For those of you who are not familiar with Coachella, it is best compared to Woodstock but for Generation Y. Music fanatics from all over the world flock to California for two weekends of nonstop music!

Not only does Coachella attract some of the most premiere, cutting edge and coolest artists from rock, indie, house, hip-hop and other genres, but also tons of celebs, socialites, models, and daring fashionistas gather amongst music lovers from all walks of life. Celebs like Kate Bosworth, Drew Barrymore, Nicole Richie, Vanessa Hudgens and many other regulars on the festival circuit have set the festival style standard for 2012.

Here are some popular fashion trends you might want to try if you plan on traveling to a few of the many festivals scheduled this 2012 summer!

Cut-Off Denim Shorts: A proper pair of cut-off shorts are intended to look tattered and slightly dirty. This makes them a perfect option for an outdoor festival. A great cut-off denim short is the Trinity short from Silver Jeans Co.

Crop Tops: If you’re attending a festival this summer you’re bound to get hot. A perfect solution fashionably beat the heat is by wearing a cropped top. A helpful hint when wearing a crop top is to match it with a high waisted bottom so that it balances your figure.

Boots: A great pair of boots will go a long way when you’re spending the weekend outdoors. Not only is a cute pair of boots fashionable, but they will also protect your feet. I like the Denver boot from Volatile.

Gladiator Sandals: A chic pair of gladiator sandals will keep you cool while still looking stylish.

Feathers: Opt for accessories like feather jewelry, headdresses and accented items.

Accessorize: Great accessories are key for festivals. Opt for earrings, necklaces, bangles, rings and headbands that can be versatile.

This might just be amazing! Found this neat photo amongst many others that I (highly) suggest checking out at lifeblasters.com.

Fringe: Fringe looks great on clothing, bags & purses. A favorite of mine is the Belize top from Jack by B.B. Dakota.

Dresses: No true festival fashionista can go wrong with a great dress! Whether it’s a maxi, above the knee, is body conscious, or loose and flowy dress, rocking a trendy pattern like floral, tribal, a bold color or stripe is always fun!

Crochet: Crocheted dresses, clothing and accessories are tried & true festival classics that have lasted through the ages. We love these crocheted pieces from the Billabong/Oracle Fox collection.

As a huge fan of fashion and self proclaimed “Music Lover”, I could go on and on and on for days about the unique relationship that the two have. But we still have one more weekend of Coachella to enjoy, more fashion trends to be found and a summer filled with festivals to embark on. Be sure to follow Coachella 2012 throughout this weekend and be on the watch for the most daring fashions inspired from the music that we all come together to love.

Remember: Be sure to let us know what you think! What was your favorite festival outfit or celeb style? You can find any of the items featured in this blog online at gliks.com or stop by your local Glik’s store location for all of your summer style needs!

Accessorize for Summer

Spring/summer 2012 is finally here, and you’re looking to update your wardrobe with some new fashion accessories! But, with upcoming extra curricular activities like fun festivals and that fabulously un-thought out roadie with your girlfriends, you’re destined to be a fashionista on a budget. That’s okay.  Here’s your chance to snag some trendy jewelry yet not break that debit card of yours!

Silver & Gold:

Silver is always hot, but gold is making a comeback this spring/summer season. This is great because gold is such a versatile metal. Dress it up or dress it down. Gold can make a basic top pop or class up any summer dress.

This Coral Stone Necklace in Gold is the perfect addition to any outfit. Its simple design leaves only the coral stone as the focus.

Add a bit of rebel to your wardrobe with colored chains! This Color Block Multi Chain Necklace Set mixes multiple gold chains with contrasting coral colored chains.

Go Tribal:

When in doubt on what to wear go with tribal accessories. Tribal shapes and patterns like zig zags, step patterns and turquoise accented jewelry are around to stay this summer.

Neon Bright:

A pop of neon never hurts. Add some vibrant color accents in the form of neon jewelry to your summer wardrobe.

Everyday I’m Cuffin ‘Em {Jeggings}

Okay fashionistas! As much as we just love playing with new trends and ideas, it’s often hard to deny tried-and-true wardrobe staples. A perfect example: cuffed jeggings. It’s a perpetual trend that’s making a comeback!

We’re absolutely bananas about the classic look of cuffed denim, and that look is now being transferred to jeggings. The key to “cuffing”  your jeggings is to make it look like you did it on purpose, because essentially you did. It’s extremely versatile and timeless.

DO: Wear a dark wash. Choosing to wear darker denim is always a great idea because it creates a “slimming” effect. A dark wash is always a classic choice because it can be dressed up or down. I suggest a stylish pair of Flying Monkey jeggings. They’re perfect for a fashionista on budget.

DON’T: Despite how classy a great pair of cuffed jeggings look with heels, avoid “cuffing” for formal occasions.

               via

DO: Add a splash of color! Cuff a pair of colored jeggings like the always-trendy blogger Alantic-Pacific chose to do.

DON’T: Cuff a pair of flared jeans! It gives the impression that you didn’t even care to get them tailored!

            via

DO: Wear white! A cuffed pair of white jeggings looks chic in the spring/summer. Flying Monkey makes a great pair of white jeggings.

DON’T: Go for a “cuffed” look in cold weather. Brrrrrr. I know it’s been warm out (it’s spring), but the thought of being “cuffed” in the cold makes me shiver. Besides, you loose your cuff in a pair of chic boots during the fall/winter seasons.

DO: Wear a fabulous pair of shoes! You can wear the “cuffed” look with heels, flats, booties, sneaks, sandals, etc. You name it, when you “cuff” your shoes become the highlight of your outfit!

            via

DON’T: Forget to have fun! Mix-n-match your outfits and don’t be afraid to be daring! You can let your inner style goddess shine with a chic outfit or rock the cuffed look like Mila Kunis did (shown above). The Suki Jegging from Silver Jeans Co has a great wash value that can be worn casually or in a chic evening outfit.
